Well, that weekend was another near disaster for the Mets, but thanks to R.A. Dickey, Looie Castillo and a huge game from Frenchy, the Mets were able to salvage the series finale in Milwaukee.
While both losses were killers - thanks to Cory (Never Surrender) Hart, Sunday's win was just as uplifting, as the Mets showed some guts.
What is clear, even though Dickey pitched well again yesterday, is that we need another starter. You hope Niese can come back soon, and hope Takahashi and Dickey keep it going, but if we really hope to stay around all season, we need at least one more solid starter.
I was telling Dave the Harness guy yesterday if I were Omar I would call the Tigers and try to pull a Ollie-for-Willis swap. Why not? Willis was demoted by the Tigers over the weekend. The contracts are a bit different, as I believe Willis a free agent after this year. Well, then the Mets pay Ollie's salary next season. I don't care. Does Willis have anything left? I don't care.
The Mets have to get Oliver Perez off the roster. Honestly, as I said a few weeks ago, they should just eat the money and move on. The guy is wasting a roster spot on a team that needs all the arms it can get its hands on.
Please, Jeff, Omar, send this guy packing and send a message. The guy is a complete joke.

A few other thoughts from the weekend.
Jerry Manuel continues to scare me with some questionable moves. I didn't like him taking out Johan Friday night, and I really didn't like him letting Feliciano only face one batter. I did tell Mrs. Bitter Bill before Rocket Boy threw his first pitch Friday that he wasn't going to get it done.
And then Saturday, Jerry, in an early big spot, sends Gary Matthews Jr. to the plate. Talk about another guy who is wasting a roster spot and should be cut. I think Howard Hessman would be better than him.

Speaking of 70s TV, the death of Gary Coleman was a tough way to start the weekend. I was a bit stunned that nobody mentioned his work in Norm McDonald's "Dirty Work," when discussing his career. He also did a great guest spot on "The Simpsons" a few years ago.
Of course, his claim to fame was playing Arnold Jackson on Diff'rent Strokes. Charlotte Rae, who played Mrs. Garrett on Diff'rent Strokes, really went out on a limb with this quote. "He was the real star (of Diff'rent Strokes) as far as I was concerned." And all this time, I thought its success was due to it's wonderful ensemble cast.
One more thing on Coleman, you wonder if the Padres will honor him before tonight's Mets game. Remember, it was back in 1979 when Coleman managed the Padres in "The Kid From Left Field."
